The Immigration Rules grants a special route of entry into the UK for those who can prove UK ancestry. Unlike other Visas, an Ancestry Visa offers full freedom to work, to be self-employed, or to start your own business in the UK.
Who can apply?
If you are a Сommonwealth national and at least 17 years of age, you may be eligible to apply for the UK Ancestry Visa providing that you are able to prove that your grandparent was born in the UK, this includes the Isle of Man or the Channel Islands.
To be successful in your application, you must establish your ability to work in the UK as well as your intention to take or seek employment. This does not mean that you will be required to produce a job offer, but you must show that you will actively be looking for employment.
You must also demonstrate that you will be able to maintain yourself while in the UK without any use of public funds. Currently, there is no specific number set to satisfy this requirement, but the amount must be adequate to cover accommodation and maintenance for a reasonable time until you will attain an income.
How long is a UK Ancestry Visa granted?
Ancestry Visas are usually granted for a five-year period, after which you may be able to apply to extend the Visa, or for Permanent Residence.
To obtain an Ancestry Visa, it is vital to prove without any doubt that you have a UK born grandparent. This may be a grandparent by blood or by means of an adoption recognised in the UK. To demonstrate this, you will need the full birth certificates and marriage certificates of the parent or grandparent through whose ancestry you are making your application.
Permanent Residence in the UK
At the end of successful completion of a five years period on the Ancestry Visa, you may be able to apply for permanent residence given that you meet the relevant requirements and have spent the five years employed, or seeking employment, in the UK. However, if you are not able to meet the criteria required then an application for extension of the Ancestry Visa may be submitted.
Every applicant is different and you may require additional documents depending on your circumstances. Please contact us on +44(0)2035812620 or firstname.lastname@example.org should you require any guidance on applying for the Ancestry Visa.
